The only thing one needs to understand about the Bible is that it is complete rubbish. That is the most key element to understand what the book is.
Probably the best way to begin is by reading the New Testament in the Living Bible (not to be confused with the New Living Translation), as it is very, very simple english and you can move through it rather quickly. After doing that, I would suggest getting either the NIV or HCSB for more in-depth study.
On a side note, I highly suggest starting with John, Romans, Galatians, Ephesians, and Colossians, as they give a very clear presentation of the “Christian basics”.
You can get any of those three at any good book store, but you’ll find the cheepest ones at a Christian bookstore most likely. If you don’t want anything fancy, you can get a Bible pretty cheep. A small pocket New Testament is only a dollar or two at a good Christian bookstore.
My suggestion is go to your local Christian bookstore and look at them in person. There are quite a few and people have different preferences.
If you don’t have a local bookstore, check out http://www.christianbook.com. They have good prices and many Bibles.
As for versions, there are quite a few good ones. There is quite a debate about which is best, but I don’t think it’s worth nit-picking. I would recommend a modern language translation like NIV or NASB because they are popular, not paraphrased and easy to read. Pick one you like though and not just take my word for it.
I like the easy-to-read translations like New International Version (NIV) and the New Living Translation (NLT). I have a study Bible that has lots of footnotes to help explain the Bible verses and say what the verses may mean for us today: Life Application Study Bible in NLT.
Check out your local bookstore or Christian bookstore because your mom is right! There are plenty of study Bibles out there for young women.. even older women. I would suggest either the NIV or the NLT. Both of these are written with modern word usage which may be easier to understand.
Here’s a link that shows different types of Bibles.http://www.christianbook.com/bibles?kw=b…

Go to a religious stores and ask for the newest English version available. They are much easy to read or grab one for young people.
