In the Book of Numbers, God has immortalized the names and families of the Hebrew nation of Israel. Many were/are able to make citizenship and inheritance claim because of the geneaological record.
Numbers also captures the population statistics and demographics of the nation after the exodus and before the exile.
By this we learn that God has specific plans for a specific people who will live their lives specifically for Him.
the book of numbers is proof that at one time a prophet was told to count his people and keep track of geneaology. so at one time it was important.
its when men claimed status over others that genealogy became Vain. it became a soild garment rather than a holy link to the family of man and its importance was Used for the salvation of mankind.
They without us cannot be saved and we without them are the same.
We need to count out posterity and keep track of our legacy and descendants.
there is also a sense of calendar in the dating and ages of the prominent Heirarchys
through these genealogies we count the beginning of Adam and Eve. and the age of families.
Numbers is a wonderful Book to give us insights into the Jewish faith and the God of the Bible. Many verses help explain some of the things that are culturally important to the Jews, AND to God.
Keep in mind that Christianity is founded upon Jesus Christ, the fulfillment of the Old Testament (Torah).
The genealogies provide a direct link and proof for the genealogies of Mary and Joseph, in Matthew and Luke, and therefore for Jesus as rightful heir to the Throne of David.
It may have been a way of auditing the premise that “not one of the promises that Jehovah has made has failed”…
It may seem boring and slow study…but every word is there for a reason. Maybe it is just a great sleeping aid, so that when God gives his beloved rest…they have a guaranteed way of getting to sleep !
All the contradictions and absurdities in that chapter prove that the Christian Bible was written by fallible humans.
