To speak correctly portuguese is not easy. People often say they speak portuguese, and the moment I hear them speak, they're speaking portunhol. Which is a mix of both.
THe best way to learn a language, obviously would be by moving to Brasil. IF that's not possible, rosetta stone, portuguese speaking friends, etc. Also online, on youtube even there are serveral brazilian portuguese courses for free!

I wanted to learn it a few years ago myself. I went to the library and got some books about brazil, I think it helps to know about the language and the people who speak it. I also got some language tapes to play in my car while I was driving around. It taught me basics like the alphabet, numbers, days of the week greetings. after a while it was pretty easy. The next step from there, if you are still interested is to get a Rosetta Stone software program for your computer. They are pretty expensive, that's why I recommend waiting until you have tried for a little while and don't find it too difficult. I would also look for a native speaker to practice with, and to teach you the proper accents and slang. Good luck.

I agree, it is a beautiful language, and it will lead you to speak/understand Spanish as well. I am visiting the Azore Islands next summer, so am starting now! I invested in the Rosetta Stone series and bought it here:http://astore.amazon.com/portugueseprodu…
Good Luck!
