My father stayed with a host family in Germany during his college days, as did a friend of mine very recently they both said that if the college hooks you up with a family.Thet said that it generally turns out ok. All you need to be aware about is that you should be polite and try and respect their customs, if they have small children don’t make too much noise at night, basically the same thing you would do if you were living in somebody else’s home anywhere else in the world. Also, watch out for language barriers, once again, if the college you are attending gets you in touch with them, they will probably speak english well, but they still might not be aware of certain slang used in America that is often misinterpreted in other parts of the world, so speak as plainly and properly as you can. I think its a really good oppurtunity and you should take it. I don’t speak a word of German, but everytime i have visited the country, everyone has been really nice. You might even get to travel to other parts of Europe and that may not be something you will be able to do later on. I hope this has been helpful! Good luck!
I assume that you are still in (high) school and not yet at university or college level.
If the whole thing is organized through your school there is absolutely nothing to be afraid of.
You can be sure that the host families are selected pretty carefully. Either it is an exchange program – then very often the families that send a student will host a student – or the host families volunteered to host students. Feel free to ask your teachers how the organization works and how host families are selected.
I am German and remember from my school time that we had exchange programs with schools in England and in France. And we had from time to time guest students in class from other countries. The hardest thing for the guest students was always the language.
Following lessons in mathematics, physics, chemistry, or any other subject in a language that is not your native language is pretty taxing, especially when you try to answer questions. But on the other hand you will find out that you understand significantly more than you ever thought possible.
I can only encourage you to go for it. It will be a great experience and so much more fun than staying at home.
I studied in Germany last year as an Erasmus student, I was in Augsburg in th bavarian area. I didn’t speak one word german, and all my lectures were hopefully in english. (I’m french by the way!)
It was such an extraordinary experience, I really encourage you to go there, german people are amazing, really welcoming. I wasn’t in a host family, I got my own flat, but don’t be scared, I’m sure you will enjoy it as much as I did…
Good luck dude!
