The Companion Bible is good
I just bought the Rainbow NIV for a friend. It color codes all the verses by things like God says, sin, slavation, discipleship, family, history, prophecy and other things. Each chapter has a good intro like who, what where, ets, themes, key words. It’s a good start, actually, you may like it forever.

You should check out http://www.bible.ca. Not only can you get a study guide, but you can find a church in your area to help you understand it. Good luck.

You will not find “a” guide to the Bible. If you are looking for recommendations, I suggest:
Scroggies Guide to the Gospels
and for Commentary: James Montgomery Boice, Gordon D. Fee, Tozer, C.S. Lewis, G. Campbell Morgan. The list can be never ending.
If you ever delve into the Koine Greek a good starting place for learning it is: The Basics of Biblical Greek by William D. Mouce. He is by far for todays age the best scholar to get you started. They also have a website at http://www.teknia.com.
